Bouclé Trend

Bouclé Trend

Now popular than ever before, bouclé is a beautiful, luxe style and trend that continues to live on into Autumn Winter 2022.

Re-emerging and re-introduced to the modern interior world during the beginning of the global pandemic, this warm, inviting and stylish texture brought a sense of comfort to our homes as we entered uncertain times — its soft, cosy appearance creating heavenly, cocoon-like spaces to escape to and relax within.

What is bouclé fabric?

Bouclé, French for 'curled', describes the yarn that is used to create bouclé textiles. When woven or knitted, this looped, nubby yarn creates a sumptuously tactile fabric that has a cosy and almost fleece-like appearance.

The origin of bouclé

Bouclé's popularity dates back to the late 40s when industrial designer, Eero Saarinen, designed the Womb Chair at the request of revolutionary American architect, Florence Knoll. According to the brief, Knoll wanted: "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows – something she could really curl up in".

The chair was created in 1948 in a soft, nubby textile made from a yarn of curled fibers, now known as Knoll’s Classic Bouclé.

Seventy years on, bouclé textiles are still softening furniture silhouettes and bringing depth to the curved furniture trend. Adding visual interest, its voluminous, soft touch texture brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia, often reminiscent of our parents and grandparents homes that we grew up in.

Applications for bouclé textiles are bountiful due to its forgiving and unfussy nature. From bold maximalist and eclectic interiors, and more typically, minimal modernist, this texture will suit a range of home interior styles and bring in a sense of calm, comfort, elegance, sophistication, and cosiness.

Bouclé isn't just for the living or lounge room, it can be featured in bedrooms and offices too! If a bouclé couch is a little too bold for your liking, our Sonoma knitted throw is abundant with a similar organic, uneven, looped, nubby texture that we know and love from traditional wool bouclé.

Made from pure cotton, Sonoma will bring textural variation to the end of your bed with a dense, natural hand feel.

How to clean bouclé fabric?

Bouclé fabric care depends on the fabric composition. It's not 'one size fits all' as different materials behave differently. When investing in this fabric, it's important to always check the recommended care instructions to know how to care for this beautiful texture to ensure its luxe state and longevity.
