Fibres that resist soiling and clean easily, wool and jute among them, hold up better here than lustrous or long-pile alternatives.

Size the rug so chairs stay on it when pulled out, which usually means allowing around 60cm beyond the table on every side. Three by four metre formats suit most dining settings.
